The devastating floods that struck Sylhet in 2025 disrupted lives, damaged homes, and affected the livelihoods of many local families. For those who lost their homes or sources of income, rebuilding their lives meant facing significant financial and logistical challenges long after the floodwaters receded.
Responding to this urgent humanitarian crisis, ShareTrip partnered with SOS Children’s Villages to support flood recovery efforts in Sylhet, particularly in the upazilas of Osmaninagar and Balaganj. The initiative aimed to help families restore safe living conditions, maintain basic health and hygiene through Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) support, and rebuild their livelihoods to move towards greater financial stability and self-reliance.
Restoring Homes and Living Conditions
The rehabilitation programme began with repairing and restoring flood-damaged homes, helping affected families move towards safer living conditions and resume their daily lives.
To reduce the risk of post-flood health and hygiene challenges, WASH kits were distributed to 70 families. These kits included essential supplies such as disinfectants, laundry and cleaning products, antibacterial soap, and oral rehydration salts.
Supporting Livelihoods and Vulnerable Families
Recognising that recovery extends beyond shelter, the initiative also provided financial assistance to selected flood-affected families to help them restore their income-generating activities. The support covered needs such as repairing small shops, restarting poultry-related activities, and resuming daily labour.
Beneficiaries were identified through field visits, with particular attention given to female-headed households, older people, daily wage earners, and families with young children.
Helping Communities Move Forward
Recovery is not just about rebuilding homes. It is also about helping people regain stability, restore their livelihoods, and rebuild their lives with dignity.
Through this initiative, ShareTrip and SOS Children’s Villages supported flood-affected communities in Sylhet through home rehabilitation, essential hygiene assistance, and livelihood support. WASH kits were distributed to 70 families, helping address essential health and hygiene needs as affected communities worked towards recovery and greater self-reliance.
